Logic Controller |

The type PCD4 programmable logic controller
used is manufactured by SAIA. Its powerful functions and speed render
sterilization cycle efficiency control "intelligent". Equipped
with both EPROM and RAM memories, cycle parameters can be edited by
authorized personnel possessing an access code.
PLC temperature control is based on a 100 Ohm PT probe located on
the chamber floor and physically separate from the recorder temperature
sensor. This controller function handles fully preprogrammed, access
code protected sterilization cycles. The use of an absolute pressure
sensor of unparalleled precision adds, in addition to vacuum set point
detection and vacuum stage validation, new functions such as leak
value measurements with digital output to tape.
Also, the programmable logic controller will compute the sterilization
factor Fo, which is likewise recorded on tape.
Indeed, this programmable logic controller; designed to meet future
European Standards, ushers in a new era of operator-oriented physical
parameter control in the sterilization field. |

Main
& submenus |

| Access to
the parameter menus is protected by code. Authorized personnel can
edit such holding time parameters as sterilization time and temperature
and final vacuum (drying) stages, with or without adding heat. New
cycles can be stored under index identifiers. Other menu options include
autoclave dedication through cycle command key disabling, conditional
start requiring keyboard entry of lot and/or operator number. Executive
pharmacists and sterilization management have a full range of programmable
functions at their disposal to ensure procedural operation and traceability. |

| Preprogrammed
cycles: |
 |
| In conformance
with NFS 90.320 standard certification requirements, the three basic
programs, i.e., "instruments", "textiles" and
"rubber" having been type-approved using typical loads,
are therefore ROM-based and tamper-proof. |
| Test
cycles: |
|

|
| Test cycles
are ROM-based programs. The leak rate test is a Bowie-Dick test complement,
quantifying chamber tightness. |
| Password-protected
programmable cycles: |
| Password holders can
access the programming menu to customize a basic cycle. The shaded
and hatched areas on the diagrams are user-programmable to create
new sterilization protocols. Basic cycle variation storage space is
9 cycles/register; i.e. 27 in all. |
 |
| Factory-programmed
cycles: |
| Autoclaves
can be ordered with up to 7 ROM-based factory-programmed cycles, all
phases of which have been checked and validated. |

Cycle
pressure and temperature curves, process identification and load data
are all recorded on the same tape. Europe range series 2H sterilizers
are standard equipped with analog and digital recorders for autoclave
serial, cycle, lot and operator number, date, time-of-day, cycle type
selected, holding temperature and time processing and cycle pressure/temperature
curve monitoring. Recorder configuration allows for two additional
temperature tracks with no hardware modification (option OPR 4002). |
| Leak
rate test: |
| The leak
rate test quantifies vacuum chamber tightness and will detect leaks
of >1.3 mbar/minute, a rate which would ruin the sterilization
process. The programmable logic controller computes leak rates from
absolute pressure sensor signals and outputs the results to the recorder
at the completion of the test cycle. |
| Sterilization
factor Fo: |
| Using signals
from the chamber floor temperature sensor, the programmable logic
controller computes the temperature rise and outputs the cycle sterilization
factor found to both tape and display. |
| Alarm
and error messages: |
| Failure
to attain low pressure set points or the occurrence of environmental
factors affecting autoclave operation (power failures, compressed
air; mains water or control system component failures) will generate
an alarm message that is both displayed on-screen and recorded on
the tape. |
